Let’s decode a zip code 📫

DYK there are 34 zip codes that span Columbia? You may know relative information about different areas of our city, but we’re deep-diving into one of the zip codes so you can puzzle piece together the Capital City through data. Are you ready?

📍We’re dropping a pin in the 29201 zip code.

County: Richland

Population: ~20,594

Land area: 11.42 square miles

A map showing the 29021 zip code outlined in red.  | Map via unitedstateszipcodes.org

For a sense of relativity — 29201 is within or borders Columbia, Cayce, and West Columbia + Earlewood, Elmwood Park, Five Points, Granby Hill, Historic Waverly, Laurel Hill, The Congaree Vista, and Whaley Street, are some of the main neighborhoods that make up this zip code.

5 quick facts:

  • 23-24 — the median age of the population.
  • 55.3% — the percentage of the population that has a bachelor’s degree or higher
  • ~75% — the percentage of households that are renter-occupied
  • 90% — the percentage of households without children
  • $32,500 — the average household income

What does Esri’s interactive tapestry map say about 29201? If you’re like, “what’s Esri?” — check this out.

This zip code is considered a college town — aka — this zip code is mostly made up of college students who love cell phones, will pay close to $1,000 in rent with roommates each month, showcase the latest fashion trends on a thrifty budget, participate in nightlife entertainment, and believe most things can be done via a phone rather than going in person.

THE WRAP

Editor’s pick: I took a weekend trip to Greenville this weekend, (hey, GVLtoday 👋). I went to Coffee Underground after the Saturday market (Greenville’s version of Soda City) and sipped some wines at City Scape Winery — a local vineyard about 30 min. from Greenville in Pelzer, SC. If you ever find yourself in Greenville, I label these places as must-see experiences.
