The city’s creative and entrepreneurial economy is growing like never before – so it’s fitting that SOCO will open their new Vista location, SOCO 80808, this fall at 808 Lady St. – for all the freelancers, side hustlers, remote workers + entrepreneurs who call Columbia home.
Why 80808? Part of the space that SOCO is expanding into was formerly an artists collective called 80808 that was a signature of the Vista’s formative years. To celebrate the role the arts/creative industry has played in the Vista and our city, SOCO is bringing the name back.
With 10,000+ sq. ft. of space right in the heart of the Vista, SOCO 80808 will be the largest of SOCO’s coworking locations to date. The new space will allow SOCO to relocate its current Vista location and expand with some new offerings – including private offices for startups + growing teams, a huge communal area that doubles as an event space, and a content creation studio for podcasting + recording. Other features include an outdoor seating area, collaboration rooms + duck-in booths for those needed moments of privacy.

But what most still don’t realize about SOCO’s model is that it’s about so much more than a workspace. SOCO’s core values and reason for existing revolve around building + supporting community. From social lunches + meet-ups to professional peer mentoring groups for members – every space, program and event is geared toward helping people connect and thrive.

And they are definitely having an impact. Some of Columbia’s most recognizable names and organizations are members of the SOCO Community, like yours truly at COLAToday (#BullStreeters), the much loved farm to table events company F2T Productions (led by rock star duo Kristian Niemi and Vanessa Driscoll Bialobreski), Krumware (a world class enterprise software services company who started back in 2016 with one employee and a desk), All Things Open (brain-child of tech guru + connector of humans, Todd Lewis) and storytelling powerhouse Cinema Couture (Veteran filmmaker Bill Grant and his growing team). Within the SOCO community, members even create opportunities for each other. It’s actually one of the group’s core values. Almost all of SOCO’s 150+ members and 70+ member companies have collaborated on a work project within the past year, and they’re hoping that SOCO 80808 will open the door for even more possibilities.
“In the new, larger space we’ll be able to give the indie community what they’ve been asking for - more space to meet and gather, private offices, places to create content. But we’ll also have more opportunity for entrepreneurs and creators of all kinds to join and share in that community,”, said Shannon Franklin, who leads SOCO’s marketing efforts. “Diversity in backgrounds, experiences and expertise is what makes us all better. We’re excited to show people that the SOCO community is real, everyone is welcome, and everyone can feel like they belong.”
