Libraries might be closed physically to the public right now, but virtually, they’re open + busier than ever, offering resources for adults, kids + families. DYK: Your library card gets you access to professional trainings, language immersions, and even movies? Today, we’re checking out (get it?) a few of the virtual offerings for you to access freely from Richland Library.

Don’t have a library card? No problem. Richland county residents can request a free library card online. You’ll receive a library card number + PIN that you can use to start exploring. Physical cards can be picked up the next time you visit one of the 14 Richland Library locations.

Here are just a few of the things we uncovered on our virtual visit. Note: Some links require a library card to access.

  • Stream a flick. From new releases to golden oldies, there are hundreds of films across two streaming platforms – Kanopy + Hoopla, with an especially strong collection of family-friendly faves.
  • Read a book. The library has 50,000+ e-books (for adults, teens, and kids) available for your perusal, so you can curl up with your e-reader even though the stacks are currently off limits. Bonus: They have 13,000+ audiobooks in their collection, as well. They also have magazines available to browse.
  • Brush up on a foreign language. Whether you’re a total beginner or looking to practice, Mango has lessons in languages from Arabic to Yiddish + a translation tool.
  • Take a course. We’re all at home and on our devices more these days. So why not take a deep dive into topics like web design, media production, business, IT + more with Lynda.com? Lynda is normally a subscription service, but it’s free of charge through the library.
  • Study up. Especially for students, the library offers free online tutoring through tutor.com. Students of all grade levels can connect with a live tutor to help with homework, test prep + career resources.
  • Time travel. We live in a truly amazing place, and the library’s local history index + the SC Historical Newspapers collection has something for all of us. Check out their collection of historic maps, photographs + illustrations, architectural drawings, oral histories + much more.
  • Small business and employment support. Each week, the library is hosting a virtual meeting with local business leaders to identify growing needs and discuss accessible resources. Certified career coaches are available through virtual, one-on-one appointments you can reserve online. We also happen to have a list of companies hiring right now ready for you to practice your new skills.
  • Let the creativity flow. Creativebug.com provides library card holders with over 1,000 DIY videos for your latest craft project at home.

The library also has archived + current local and national newspapers, legal resources, resources for ESOL, investing research, and even information on vehicle repair + maintenance.

P.S. - The library has a special message they would like you to know.
