Birds flying south

American redstart

Turn your eyes toward the sky this weekend and celebrate World Migratory Bird Day happening Saturday.

The Soda City is a rest stop for many types of birds flying south for the winter in search of warmer weather. Whether you’re looking for American redstarts or Cape May Warblers, the Saluda Riverwalk near Riverbanks Zoo is an excellent location to spot birds snacking on insects in the trees on the banks of the river.

Located 20 miles outside of Columbia, Congaree National Park is also known as one of the state’s “birding hotspots” thanks to it being the largest tract of old-growth floodplain forest still intact in the region.

If you’re interested in getting outdoors and trying out a new hobby, birding might just be the thing for you. Here are some tips and tricks to help get you started.
THE WRAP
Today’s issue was written by David.

Editor’s pick: Congratulations to Simpson’s Boiled Peanuts (overall winner) and Meek’s Nuts (best flavored) for winning the judge’s awards for best boiled peanuts at the annual Palmetto Peanut Boil. The competition was tight, but Simpson’s peanuts were the size of baby arms and had a perfect salty briny flavor. The nuts were firm enough to hold together, but still soft enough to soak in all the flavor. Grab a bag when you see them around town.
