Making your flying process plane and simple đŸ›«

Traveling via plane is fun — jet-setting over beautiful blue waters or rolling hills, taking in cloud formations, and landing in a completely different location in a matter of hours is unlike anything else.

The whole navigating the airport part? Less exciting, and sometimes pretty stressful. To help make your time at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) as smooth as possible, we’ve created a guide that covers everything from gates and parking to details on the airport’s 25 nonstop flights.

What to know

  • TSA | According to the CAE’s Airport’s website, passengers should arrive 90 minutes to two hours prior to scheduled departure for domestic flights. Here are tips for a smooth security experience.
  • Map it out | If you’re like us and need to completely visualize a place before you step foot inside, this map of the airport will be your saving grace.
  • Food and drink | If you have spare time — because your check-in experience was so quick — you’ll probably want to grab a bite to eat. A breakfast sandwich from Riverbanks Bar and Grill and coffee from Red Eye Coffee will satiate you until your next destination.
  • Reminder | By May 3, 2023, you will need a REAL ID to board commercial flights in the US.
  • Flight status | While we recommend staying updated via your respective airline, you can also check the airport’s dashboard for your flight status in a pinch.

Parking, shuttles, and rideshare

Not everyone has a bestie who will drop everything to pick them up from their late-night landing. Each surface lot offers 30 minutes of free parking with each additional 30 minutes costing $1. Beyond that, the price per day is as listed:
  • Surface lot parking | $10/day
  • Covered parking garage | $14/day
  • Premier parking lot | $1000/per year for frequent flyers
Because CAE only has one terminal, all of these parking options are within walking distance of TSA and your gate.

Design plans for Finlay Park renovation

Design plans to revitalize Finlay Park in downtown Columbia include an improved event stage, playground, climbing wall, splash pad, and pathways to enhance a pedestrian-friendly environment.

Work on the $21.5 million renovation will likely begin next spring and take up to 18 months after the completion of the design process, according to The State.

A key feature of the new park will be the renovated fountain that flows into a new central pond which will be surrounded by lush plants.

The landscaping of the park will be a significant part of the update with the addition of a shaded strolling garden, new shrubs, grasses, and flowers planted along the hillside. The proposal plans to preserve the existing canopy of trees and plant new ornamental trees in key areas.

Plans to update the park have been in the works since 2019 but are now moving forward quickly, thanks to $8.5 million from the city + $1 million from state funding.
THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by David.

Editor’s pick: One of my favorite parts of flying out of CAE is checking out the rotating Art in the Airport exhibit that features works from local artists. Currently on display is art from Cait Maloney, an award-winning graphic designer, and muralist whose art shines with Soda City pride.
