Museums are the cultural hubs of Columbia. Whether you’re looking to learn something new about the Midlands or plotting a way to spend your Saturday afternoon, here are 15 museums to visit in our city.

Columbia Museum of Art | This award-winning museum is home to an internationally renowned collection. The art in the museum’s collection spans 5,000 years of global history. CMA offers traveling shows and exhibitions, an interactive activity space + events, and classes for all ages.

Robert Mills House and Gardens | The Robert Mills House is one of five historic house museums in Columbia. This house is named after the prominent architect who designed it — and who is also known for creating the Washington Monument.

SC State Museum | The State Museum is the one-stop for all museum needs. There are rotating exhibits, a planetarium, programming for children, and 4-D movies. The museum provides educational environments that entertain, inspire imagination and creativity, and enrich the lives of visitors.

News Notes

Closing

The Woody on Main — a popular dance and brunch spot — will close on Friday, Oct. 31 after five years on Main Street. Owners cite rising costs and state liquor laws as key challenges. A final Halloween party + events are planned. Follow along for updates on location + happenings.

Open

Que Bueno Mexican Bar & Grill is now open on Sumter Street in downtown Columbia, located between Sound Bites and Greek Boys. This location joins three others across the Midlands serving Mexican cuisine and cocktails.

Development

A seven-story boutique hotel is planned near Segra Park in the BullStreet District. Vulcan Development will invest $38 million and create over 50 jobs. The added hotel inventory will help bring events like the NCAA Tournament to town. (The State)

Seasonal

Clinton Sease Farm’s 21st annual corn maze opens tomorrow, Sept. 19, in Lexington. This year’s eight-acre maze follows a “Barnyard Animals” theme and runs weekends through Nov. 2. General admission is $18 at the gate. Expect loads of fun for the kids, like hayrides, a pumpkin patch, and a low ropes course.

Community

The SC State Fair’s ProKitchen Cookie Kitchen is now operated in partnership with Oliver Gospel Mission. Volunteers will help serve ~70,000 cookies + Roastery coffee, with proceeds going towards the Ride of Your Life scholarships and local outreach. It’s also a great volunteer opportunity. (Cola Daily)

Drink

The 13th annual Great American Whiskey Fair returns Friday, Oct. 3, to 701 Whaley with 300+ whiskeys to sample, masterclasses, and VIP tastings. Founded by Bourbon’s Kristian Niemi, the event brings connoisseurs + tasters together.

Job

Biz

Why are the same firms that backed Uber, Venmo, and eBay also backing Pacaso (Nasdaq ticker reserved: $PCSO)? Because it’s disrupting the $1.3 trillion vacation home market with co-ownership, already earning $110 million+ in gross profit in under five years. (And until midnight, you can join the 10,000+ shareholders.)‡*

Last week, I mentioned I was trying to see the gator at the Riverwalk and didn’t have any luck, but someone on TikTok did. The post of the giant gator gliding through the canal has garnered over 6,000 likes and thousands of shares with friends.
