Orangetheory offered a Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) deal to Gamecock legend, 2022 Women’s NCAA Tournament National Champion, Most Outstanding Player, and National Player of the Year, Aliyah Boston.

Part of the deal entailed designing a custom collaborative workout to share with Orangetheory members across the nation. It infuses Aliyah’s athletic training regimen with a one-hour Orangetheory-based workout focused on endurance, strength, and power.

To celebrate the collaboration, COLAtoday was invited to break a sweat alongside Aliyah + try the new “Shot Clock” workout in Orangetheory’s newest studio location (940 Harden St.) which opened last Monday.

Introducing, the “Shot Clock” workout.

🍊 Orangetheory workouts use heart rate-based interval training so you can get real-time results as they’re displayed throughout the studio.
🍊 Jog, run, and sprint on the treadmill in time intervals, switching when your Orangetheory coach calls out the next phase.
🍊 In between treadmill intervals, hop on the rowing machine that uses water resistance for endurance + speed.
🍊 Perform agility-style + weight-resistant workouts on the weight floor that Aliyah is familiar with — think quick feet, jumping over a lateral line, and weighted medicine ball handoffs. Take a peek into the workout here.

Try the new workout for yourself as it’s released nationally for the first time tomorrow psst, your first class is free — and we recommend booking a class in Columbia’s newest studio.

Keep up with Aliyah as she continues to break records on the court. During Monday night’s season opener (and 101-31 victory against East Tennessee State), Aliyah had the 61st double-double of her career and finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds in 20 minutes.

Grab tickets to the next Gamecock Women’s Basketball home game against Clemson happening on Thurs., Nov. 17 at 7 p.m.

Inside the collection: Forget football — ever heard of chunkey?

Presented by a COLAtoday Partner

Chunkey (or tchung-kee) was first developed in 600 AD near the Cahokia Mounds, which are located in modern-day Illinois. | Photo provided by the South Carolina State Museum
For some, fall means football (go Gamecocks). 🏈 But for Native Americans, it was all about chunkey. The game challenged players to throw a spear where they thought a disk-shaped stone rolled down a playing field would stop. Whoever’s spear landed closest won a point. The game built connection, relieved stress, and helped warriors hone their hunting skills.

To see chunkey stones for yourself, head to the South Carolina State Museum, where several are currently on display.*

THE WRAP

Today’s issue was written by Sam.

Editor’s pick: I am so thankful I was able to work out with Aliyah Boston in the new Orangetheory studio. It was overall an extremely fun + equally challenging workout. I highly recommend giving it a try.
