Former Gamecock pitcher Jordan Montgomery is headed to the World Series with the Texas Rangers. The Rangers secured a World Series spot with an 11-4 victory over the Houston Astros in Game 7 of the AL Championship Series. He’s the first Gamecock player in the World Series since 2018. Earlier this month, Riverbanks Zoo, SCDNR, and SCUTE volunteers released Destiny — a green sea turtle hatchling that arrived at the zoo two years ago. On Oct. 10, a new green sea turtle hatchling (still unnamed) arrived at Riverbanks. After a few months of growth behind the scenes, the turtle will join a public habitat in early 2024.
Seasonal
The Columbia Fireflies unveiled its Holiday Lights promotional schedule, running from Thursday, Nov. 16 to Sunday, Dec. 31. Fans can enjoy returning theme nights like Thirsty Thursday, Winter Wag-Along Wednesdays, and more. Plus, Santa will be available for pictures, and a Christmas Tree Farm will be set up for purchases.
Community
The Columbia Parks and Recreation Foundation’s annual Legacy Ceremony will honor A’ja Wilson, a former Gamecock, Olympic Gold Medalist, and WNBA superstar. The fundraiser will take place on Monday, Nov. 13, at the USC Alumni Center. Participation supports the preservation + enhancement of city parks and recreation programs.

USC’s Arnold School of Public Health, in collaboration with SNAC + SNAP-Ed programs, launched the 5210 SC statewide campaign promoting children’s health. The campaign encourages kids to eat five fruits and vegetables, limit screen time to two hours, engage in at least one hour of physical activity, and avoid sugary drinks daily to promote sustainable lifestyle changes.

SC Nexus received federal designation as a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub (Tech Hub) by the U.S. Department of Commerce and is one of 31 Tech Hubs selected from nearly 400 applicants.
