News Notes

Weather

The Midlands is seeing increased risk for wildfires following a dry spell and heightened winds. The National Weather Service raised its risk metric to “moderate,” though this is expected to decrease this weekend as wind speeds lower. Locals should monitor their properties and adhere to the ongoing burn ban. (The Post and Courier)

Development

City staff determined the Columbia Place Mall wouldn’t make a good site for the new Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Staff cited cost concerns, proximity to the general public, and traffic impacts at a meeting earlier this week. The city will continue discussing options for the EOC’s relocation. (WLTX)

Environment

Columbia residents can give their spring yard work a boost by getting free, nutrient-rich compost courtesy of the city’s Solid Waste Division. The chipper giveaway will take place Saturday, April 19, 8 a.m.-12 p.m., at 123 Humane Ln.

Opening

A Korean chicken restaurant is flying to Harbison. Bibimbox Korean Kitchen & Wings will move into the former site of Uberrito and host its soft opening on Monday, April 7. Beyond fried wings, the restaurant will have other Korean comfort foods like rice bowls, hibachi bowls, and shaved ice.

Number

1,290. That’s how many trees Columbia Forestry and Beautification + Columbia Green planted in six months. This achieved the city’s “Beat the Heat” goal — an effort to grow its urban canopy that was anticipated to take five years. You can donate to the cause to keep the effort growing.

Plan Ahead

Ready, set, glow — Artista Vista’s Light and Lantern Parade is marching back on Saturday, April 12, 8-9 p.m. to illuminate the night with color. Participation is free and will be accompanied by live music, and a prize will be given to the best lantern.
