Be-leaf it or not, there’s a lot do around the garden in November. You can turn those piles of leaves into mulch, clean up overgrown vines, and it’s the best time of year to move trees and shrubs.
Spring for seeds
Peruse seed catalogs and grab those springtime favorites that are so popular they tend to sell out come the thaw. We’re talking seeds like snap peas, radishes, specialty lettuces, and heirloom tomatoes. You can also get your wishlist going for the spring planting of fall bulbs like hostas, gladiolas, and dahlias.
Check out these local spots to nab your favorites:
From checking estrogen and testosterone levels to cortisol testing, these transparently priced tests provide quick answers to your pressing health questions.
They’re also the exact same tests your doctor uses — only faster and easier.
The Gamecocks will honor 23 seniors ahead of Saturday’s matchup vs. Coastal Carolina, moving Senior Day up a week. Coach Shane Beamer says the change is meant to “shake it up” ahead of rivalry week after back-to-back home losses to Clemson. (The State)
Development
Local coworking company SOCO will open its third Columbia location atop Gather COLA, the new BullStreet food hall opening Friday, Dec. 5. The workspace will include 24 offices, collaborative zones, and outdoor areas by early next year. (The Post and Courier)
Arts
Local artists can apply for free vendor spots at the Weihnachtsmarkt holiday market hosted at Bierkeller on the riverfront. Columbia Streams Art is offering up to eight artist spaces per day across three December weekends.
Edu
USC journalism students will now be able to pitch real stories to SC Public Radio through a new CIC + SCETV partnership. Juniors and seniors will attend news meetings, work with editors, hear their stories aired statewide, and gain resume experience before graduation.
Eat
Don’t want to cook for Thanksgiving this year? Free Times did a roundup of local restaurants that will be staying open next Thursday. Options range from a vegan plate from The Hoot, the buffet at Flaming Grill, or an early brunch at Toasty Hot Spot. Or, go all out with a three-course dinner at Hampton Street Vineyard.
Plan Ahead
Get your tux or gown ready for Columbia Museum of Art’s 75th Anniversary Gala, “Lighting the Way: A Passport to the Arts,” on Friday, Jan. 16, from 7 to 11 p.m. There’ll be global-inspired food, live painting, and a grand reveal of the newly relit galleries. Tickets start at $175.
Did you know that COLAtoday has been sending out newsletters every Monday through Friday (give or take a few holidays) for almost 10 years? During that time, we’ve covered everything from civics to the arts — but these are a few of my favorite stories we’ve shared:
We rely on local and national advertisers to keep our newsletters free and accessible to all, but we also have a giving campaign that allows readers to support our team more directly. If you feel passionately about stories like these, consider making a contribution.

Back to gardening, fall is a great time to check the nutrients in your soil. I recently did this in my yard, and it was as simple as scooping some soil into a small bag, filling out a sheet of paper, and mailing it off to Clemson. I had the results in my inbox in about a week. Hopefully, now I can get the right fertilizer mix and fix those bare spots in the grass.
