News Notes

Outdoors

It’s almost time to hit the lake. Dominion Energy will reopen Lake Murray public parks on Wednesday, April 1 through Monday, Sept. 7, with day passes required for the Lexington-side beach. Visitors can reserve passes online, and the Irmo-side boat launch will no longer accept cash payments.

Sports

South Carolina women’s basketball landed three AP All-Americans for the second straight season, led by Joyce Edwards on the second team, Raven Johnson on the third team, and Ta’Niya Latson earning honorable mention. The Gamecocks open NCAA Tournament play Saturday, March 21 at Colonial Life Arena.

Open

Thai Delicacies has reopened on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia after a brief closure. The restaurant temporarily closed to mourn a family loss and thanked customers for their support. (The State)

Development

Columbia City Council approved a rezoning that could bring ~300 workforce housing units and commercial space to ~10 acres near Lake Murray Boulevard. The mixed-use project, planned near Broad River Road and Prisma Health Parkridge, still needs additional approvals before moving forward. (WLTX)

Theater

Take flight to Neverland with Columbia Children’s Theatre’s “Peter Pan JR.,” running Friday, March 27 through Sunday, March 29 at Brookland-Cayce High School. Tickets are on sale now for the show featuring performers from its PB&J Players program.

Edu

EdVenture Children’s Museum was selected for a national STEM partnership with Cummins Inc., receiving $10,000 to expand hands-on science and technology programming for children and families. The initiative supports early STEM learning through the Association of Children’s Museums.

Eat

When dinner turns into a staring contest with your fridge, Forkful meals save the night. They’re fully prepared and ready in minutes — with zero seed oils and high-quality proteins. Use code CMD50 to take 50% off your first order.*

Tech

If your computer overheats with a few tabs open or sounds ready for liftoff, the problem might not be your device — it’s likely your antivirus. Many big-name brands are bulky + full of pop-ups. Webroot’s antivirus protection uses 33 times less space and scans up to six times faster. Get protected.*

Real Estate

A rare opportunity is available in the heart of Five Points. The two-story space at 738 + 746 Harden St. sits directly across from the iconic Five Points Fountain and offers up to 4,066 SF for retail or office use. Lease one floor — or both. Check it out.*

🌴 The best around

The greenhouse at Wingard’s Market is filled with indoor plants to brighten your home. | Photo by COLAtoday
Last month, we shared that Wingard’s Market was in the running for a USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice award. Now, it’s official — the Lexington garden center has been named the No. 1 plant nursery in the country, where “there’s always something blooming.”

They’re celebrating the win (and thanking the community that helped get them there) with a customer appreciation day on Saturday, March 28, featuring 25% off most items, 10% off produce, and giveaways throughout the day.

The Buy

The best Easter eggs and decorations on sale ahead of the holiday. We recently shopped online party supply store Oriental Trading, and it’s got Easter covered — especially if you’re hosting an event on a budget. Check out our faves + use code BCFREESHIP for free shipping on any order:

🐰 Easter basket assembly just got easier with an Easter basket filler kit on sale for under $7.
🐰 Go for 24 eggs pre-filled with candy — marked down to under $15 — to set up an egg hunt in a flash.
🐰 Bring springtime cheer to your yard with an inflatable blue bunny that’s 24% off.

The Wrap

This event really closed fast down the stretch. The Carolina Cup is only nine days away, coming up Saturday, March 28. I haven’t made it in years, but it’s considered an annual “rite of spring” by many South Carolinians. Last year, China Beach won. I’m always a fan of the horse names.
