Museums are the cultural hubs of Columbia. Whether you’re looking to learn something new about the Midlands or plotting a way to spend your Saturday afternoon, here are 14 museums to visit in our city.

Art

Columbia Museum of Art, 1515 Main St., Columbia, SC 29201 | $10 for adults, $5 for students | This award-winning museum is home to an internationally renowned collection. The art in the museum’s collection spans 5,000 years of global history. CMA offers traveling shows and exhibitions, an interactive activity space + events and classes for all ages.

History

McKissick Museum, 1501 Pendleton St. | Free | McKissick is located at the heart of the historic Horseshoe on the University of South Carolina’s campus. The museum’s collections date back to 1801 and provide insight into the history of the University and the community, culture, and environment of the American South.

Kids

EdVenture Children’s Museum, 211 Gervais St. | $11.95, $10.95 for seniors, educators, and military + Free for members and children under 2 | EdVenture is an educational museum dedicated to creating new generations of lifelong learners through museum experiences, afterschool programming, and camps.

Local

Columbia Fire Museum, 1800 Laurel St. | Free | Museum attractions date back as far as the mid 1800s and include a 1929 American LaFrance fire engine, a 1903 horse-drawn steamer + more.

Military

US Army Basic Combat Museum, 2400 Ft. Jackson Rd. | Free | The Basic Combat Museum tells the story of how training in the U.S. Army has developed since 1917 when Fort Jackson first opened. Visitors can follow the evolution of army training from WWI to how soldiers do it today.

State

SC State Museum, 301 Gervais St. | $8.95 | The State Museum is the one-stop for all museum need. There are rotating exhibits, a planetarium, programming for children and 4-D movies.

  • Ron Richardson & Friends Presents The Sounds of Soul | Friday, July 21 | 8-10 p.m. | Chayz Lounge, 607 Meeting St., West Columbia | $30 | This group, with special guest Beth Inabinett, will have you grooving the night away to the songs of Erykah Badu, Anthony Hamilton, The Isley Brothers, Jill Scott, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Chaka Khan, and much more.

  • Midland’s Women’s Day | Saturday, July 22 | 10 a.m.-4 p.m. | Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, 1101 Lincoln St., Columbia | Women’s Day focuses on educating, empowering, and nurturing women and is a one-stop shop to local products, services, and resources in Columbia and surrounding areas.
  • Baseball Day | Saturday, July 22 | 11 a.m.-4 p.m. | South Carolina State Museum, 301 Gervais St., Columbia | $8.95 | See the exhibit “The 521 All-Stars,” meet players from the team, pose for a photo with the Columbia Fireflies mascot, Mason, and more.

Southeastern Esthetics Institute is launching its new Nail Technology and Massage Therapy programs on Monday, Aug. 7.
  • The Nail Technology Program prepares future nail artists with 300 hours of training, focusing on sanitation and infection control.
  • Students in the Massage Therapy Program complete 650 hours of training to learn how to relieve pain through therapeutic touch.
Ready to change the beauty industry? Apply for one of five $1,000 Massage Therapy scholarships by Friday, July 21.

  • Jill Smith + Associates, a private counseling practice, opened a new, expanded office at 1777 Bull St., near downtown. The practice, known for its modern mental health care and talk therapy, has served over 7,000 clients in the Midlands for 20 years.
Coming Soon
  • Southern Smoked Tavern is opening locations soon at 924 E. Main St. in Lexington and 105 Ellett Rd. in Chapin. The new spots will offer family-friendly dining and a place to watch sports. Menu highlights include Burnt End Deviled Eggs, Southern Charcuterie Board, Smoked Wings, and Barbeque Smash Burger.
Development
  • Richland County Council approved financial incentives for Huger Flats, a $100 million housing development at the former SCANA site on Huger Street. The project, one of Cola’s most expensive developments, includes a 643-space parking garage, sidewalks, and a pocket park. The developer will receive a 50% property tax break for 15 years. Biz
  • Orangeburg’s Mixon Seed Service Inc. is investing $1.2 million to expand into Calhoun County, purchasing the L.B. Wannamaker Seed Co. facility. The site will be repurposed for cover crop production and a SouthLand Wildlife retail storefront, creating nine jobs. (Columbia Business Report)

  • Richland County’s Solid Waste and Recycling Division is hosting a hazardous waste disposal event on Saturday, July 29 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. at the C&D Landfill Drop-off Center located at 1070 Caughman Road North. The drive-thru event is exclusive to Richland County residents.
Community
  • “Operation: Cool Down,” West Columbia program to help residents beat the heat, is providing new box fans to residents aged 55 and older, those with respiratory issues, and families with young children.

The Nickelodeon Theatre’s 1600 block neighbor, Smoked, is offering two featured drinks this week to celebrate the double feature premiere of Barbie x Oppenheimer at the Nickelodeon Theatre tonight.

One option is the Main Street Barbie, a blend of Plymouth Gin, fresh watermelon, orgeat, and a hint of fresno pepper.

For those who prefer a bolder taste, the Manhattan Project combines Laphroaig 10, Harleston Green Blended Scotch, Drambuie, Cherry Heering, Olorosso Sherry, and a Fernet Rinse.

The special drinks will be served through the end of July.
