Anyone else still writing 2023 instead of 2024? Last year left a lasting impression + we want to commemorate it the best way we know how — through our inaugural COLAtoday Picture of the Year contest.

Between our newsletter and Instagram, you’ve already seen tons of our photos, so we want to see (and share) some of yours — and give a prize for the winning shot. Here’s everything you need to know to participate.

The rules + details:

Photo submissions are open today through Wednesday, Jan. 17 at 11:59 p.m. You are allowed to submit up to five photos, but each must have been taken by you during 2023. To sweeten the pot, anyone who submits a photo will receive 20% discount to use in our online marketplace, Six & Main.

Photo submissions must include a visual element that directly connects to Cola. Examples include a photo from a local sporting event, music performance, festival, or other 2023 happening; a picture taken at a local park; or a shot that highlights a landmark in our city. Photos that do not include a local element will not be considered. Additionally, photos that include nudity or offensive language or visuals will not be accepted.

Finalists will be selected by our team and announced in the newsletter on Tuesday, Jan. 23, and you, our readers, will have the chance to vote for COLAtoday’s 2023 Picture of the Year. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, Jan. 30 and will receive a $25 gift card to use at Six & Main.

SC Philharmonic know-how for first-timers

Presented by a COLAtoday Partner

So, you’ve never seen the Phil perform before, and you don’t know what to expect.

Take a breath, let go of any preconceptions you might have, and cancel that tuxedo rental. Here’s everything a Philharmonic first-timer needs to know:

Should I arrive early?

Plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before concert time so you can find your seat, check your phone, and absorb the atmosphere. If you’re late, you may end up listening for a few minutes from the lobby. (If that happens, the usher will show you your seat at a pause in the program so your arrival won’t disturb other concertgoers.)

How long is each concert?

It varies, but most Philharmonic concerts are ~90 minutes to two hours long, with an intermission at the halfway point.

Can I bring my kids?

Absolutely. Attending a concert can be a great experience for children ages seven and older — and there are half-price student rush tickets available 30 minutes before the concert starts.

Civic
  • West Columbia secured a $288,000 grant from USDOT’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. This funding — aimed at improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers — will upgrade the Highway 1 Corridor with new crosswalks, sidewalks, and traffic calming measures.
Open
  • Longstanding West Columbia music venue, New Brookland Tavern, relocated to Five Points, taking over the former Cotton Gin spot on Harden Street. Check out photos from their opening night, showcasing the popular local band Sequoyah Prep School. (Free Times)
Environmental
  • Elevated lead levels, likely from Fort Jackson’s munitions activities, are contaminating Gills Creek watershed in Columbia. Detected near Rockyford Lake and downstream, this pollution poses risks to the ecosystem and public health. DHEC is accepting public comments on this issue until Monday, Jan. 15. (The State)
Concert
  • The SC Philharmonic’s “Beethoven & Blue Jeans” event returns on Saturday, Jan. 13, featuring pianist Andrew Armstrong. This casual, denim-themed concert at the Koger Center for the Arts includes Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto + works by Brahms and Farranc, blending the comfort of cotton with classical music excellence.
Eat
  • Four Main Street restaurants are offering half-price specials through Wednesday, Jan. 31. Enjoy half-off lunches at The Grand on Main, Hanabi Hibachi and Sushi, and Smoked, valid weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, Goodlife Café is offering half-off dinners from 4 to 8 p.m.
Community
