Today, we dug through the archives to find some of the interesting headlines from Columbia on the 21st of September.
1988 | Lunch places spread thick downtown | “If some cities are known for famous museums and others for great restaurants and theaters, Columbia’s claim to fame could be that it is out to lunch,” wrote Pat Berman in the 1988 issue of The State.
1992 | Sidney Park, downtown at a crucial juncture | Before Finlay Park was hosting Hootie blowouts and Sizzlin’ Summer concerts, there was debate about even building a stage there. Now, with a brand-new amphitheater opening this fall, Cola’s on the verge of the next era of concerts in the park.

Scout Motors is investing an additional $300 million in Blythewood to build a Supplier Park supporting 1,000 new jobs. The 200-acre site will include battery, parts, and accessories facilities, bringing Scout’s total SC investment impact near $700 million.
Sports
The Columbia Fireflies fell 8-2 to the Lynchburg Hillcats in the deciding game of the Carolina League Championship Series, ending their postseason run. Plan aheadfor their 2026 season beginning April 6.

The SC State Museum’s newest exhibition, “When I See Myself, I See…,” opens Friday, Sept. 26. The portrait series by Gullah Gullah Island’s Natalie Daise features 21 SC students from Voorhees University’s GEAR UP program, with videos, essays + art.

Richland County approved a $4 million plan to expand affordable housing and assist first-time homebuyers, including teachers and first responders. Half the funds will support new construction, while the rest will offer matched down payment assistance. (WLTX)
