Bierkeller is opening soon
Bierkeller is opening soon in Columbia, SC

We wrote an article in September 2021 announcing Bierkeller Columbia was planning to develop a brick-and-mortar location on the river in the back of the CanalSide Lofts, located off Taylor Street. Well, the finishing touches are being assembled, and it plans to open in May.
The background
Bierkeller Columbia is inspired by German culture where beers are enjoyed in a gemütlich (cozy) Biergarten setting. Scott Burgess, founder + owner of Bierkeller, spent a decade in Germany and decided to bring the authenticity, freshness, hyper-locality, and consistency of its beer culture to Columbia.

The beer
Scott took the COLAtoday team on a tour of the new brewery to showcase the details + effort that has gone into making the German-designed brewery as authentic as possible.
The custom-designed brewhouse holds classic upstanding brew tanks but also hallmark German-designed horizontal lager tanks that are kept at a colder temperature than normal, mimicking German brewing techniques.
Most of the CO2 will be produced naturally. It can be precisely controlled because the brewery will use specialized equipment designed in Germany.

Fun fact: The horizontal lager tanks were custom-designed to have a line that runs from tank to tap, so the beer will come straight from the tank itself and into the hands of locals, making the beer as fresh as possible.
While we were discussing the steps for making the four-ingredient beers, Scott said, “It’s the small details that make the experience. You don’t have to know why or how everything works, but you’ll know it’s better — you’ll just be able to taste it.”
The food
Locals will be able to munch on several German-style foods that will be available via walk-up windows — including one outside so you can order from the Biergarten.

Your primary care doctor plays a vital role in the early detection and prevention of cancers, including CRC. | Photo provided by MUSC Health
Did you know?1 in 24 Americans will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC) in their lifetime. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, so we’re giving you a look at the numbers and ways to reduce your risk.
By the numbers
No. 3: Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide in men and women and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the US.
75%: Patients with second-degree relatives with CRC have a 75% higher chance of developing the disease.
45-75: Adults ages 45 to 75 should get screened for colorectal cancer.
3%: In recent years, cases have reduced by 3% — due in large part to a decrease in patient risk factors as well as increased screenings and polypectomies (read: a minimally-invasive procedure to remove a polyp).
How to reduce your risk
Drink plenty of water.
Limit red meat and add more fruits and vegetables to your diet.
Add probiotics to your routine and consume more fiber.
Get screened and bring up any concerns to your primary care doctor.*

How to see the synchronous fireflies at Congaree National Park
Enter the lottery to see synchronous fireflies light up Conagree National Park | Photo by National Park Services
Each spring and early summer, fireflies return to the Congaree National Park and mysteriously synchronize their flashing. SC’s only national park hosts a synchronous fireflies viewing event for ~two weeks between mid-May and mid-June when this natural phenomenon occurs. This year’s event will take place from Thursday, May 16 to Saturday, May 25.
The awe-inspiring display of synchronous flashing has become so popular that visitors now can only see it if they are selected from a lottery.
How it works
The lottery opens on Thursday, April 4, and closes on Wednesday, April 10. Winners will be notified on Tuesday, April 16.
All applicants are charged a $1 fee upon lottery entry. Those selected will be charged the remaining $24 to secure their passes.
Passes admit one passenger vehicle with up to two axles + eight passengers.
Passes are non-transferable and valid only for the specified date.
What to expect
The gates for those with passes will open at 7 p.m. and close at 8:30 p.m. Pro tip: The best time to view fireflies is between 9 and 10 p.m., but be aware — bad weather can affect firefly activity.
Congaree National Park emphasizes the well-being of fireflies because this phenomenon only happens in a handful of places. To protect firefly habitats, certain areas of the park will close daily at 4:30 p.m. between Thursday, May 16 + Saturday, May 25.
Follow these firefly rules
Minimize flashlight use and use only red-mode lights or lights with a red filter.
Avoid using cell phones for light or photography/video in the viewing area.
Stay on the designated Firefly Trail while exploring.
Refrain from catching or disturbing the fireflies.
You can apply insect repellent before arriving at the park, but no repellent can be applied after entry.
Fun Fact: Out of 2,000 species of fireflies, only three species of synchronous fireflies can be found in North America. I don’t know about you guys, but I think it’s pretty unique that you can find these fireflies in Columbia. I highly recommend entering the lottery to try and see them in person.
