Transit

A new sidewalk project will connect downtown Columbia to the fairgrounds and Williams-Brice Stadium via Assembly Street and George Rogers Boulevard. The 10-ft-wide paths aim to improve walkability and game day safety. Construction is expected to begin later this year or early 2027. (WIS)

Coming Soon

Dutch Bros. Coffee is building its first Columbia location on Garners Ferry Road, near I-77 and the VA Medical Center. Permits were issued in December for a drive-thru + walk-up shop. No opening date has been announced. (Post and Courier)

Development

Lexington Town Council approved annexing more than 190 acres on Barr Road, allowing a 299-home Meritage Homes subdivision to proceed. The approval adds oversight for traffic impacts and fees. (WLTX)

History

Columbia’s oldest restaurant, Villa Tronco, will be honored with a historical marker on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. The unveiling ceremony is presented by SC Archives & History, Richland County Conservation Commission, and the SC Restaurant & Lodging Association.

State

To offset cost delays in major roadwork, Gov. Henry McMaster plans to request $1.1 billion in his upcoming 2026 executive budget. The proposal would keep infrastructure projects like Carolina Crossroads. (WLTX)

Arts

The Columbia Museum of Art will unveil its new collection galleries on Friday, Jan. 16, marking the final phase of its 75th anniversary renovation. New installations span American, Asian, European, and modern works, including pieces by Jasper Johns and Mario Joyce.
