Short-term rentals in Richland County are on the rise. Today we’re breaking down the new changes with a new ordinance, adopted by City Council on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.

    • The USC women’s championship parade, happening on Sunday, April 14, prompts road closures starting at 12 p.m. See details on parking, maps, and more for Sunday’s celebration.
    Arts
    • Renowned artist Natalie Daise’s portrait series, “Matriarchs of the Lowcountry” — celebrating six Black women who have preserved Gullah cuisine — has been acquired by the SC State Museum. The portraits will be showcased during the museum’s Harvesting Heritage event happening on Saturday, May 18.
    Community
    • The Congaree Vista Guild will hold a rededication ceremony for The Gong, honoring the late Marvin Chernoff. Stolen earlier this year, the artwork has been recovered and repaired. The ceremony will take place Tuesday, April 16 at 3 p.m. at 1100 Lincoln St.
    Biz
    • Scout Motors opened its Columbia Connection Center in the BullStreet District. Located in the First Base Building, it serves as a community space for inquiries and showcases Scout’s history + updates on its Blythewood Production Center. (Cola Daily)

      👀 Is a new restaurant coming to Cola?

      Yesterday, we saw a cryptic post on Instagram that was posted six days ago with the caption, “El Vago Mexican Kitchen coming soon ... May 2024. Downtown Columbia SC!” So we did a little digging to see what we could find.

      After a quick Google search, we found its website — that still seems to be in the works — but if you scroll down the page, we also found that it is set to be located at 601 Main St., suite A, which is right beside The Corner Blend + JJ Tea House.

      We also found an application (posted yesterday) that will allow the sale and on-premises consumption of beer, wine, and liquor.

      So far the restaurant claims it will serve a modern twist on Mexican classics. We’ll keep you posted.
