Columbia has 30+ boards and commissions covering everything from parks to airports to food insecurity. Pro tip: click ‘learn more’ and ‘quick apply’ on MatchBoard if something feels like a fit. Here are a few with current openings or soon-to-end terms:
Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) | 11 vacancies | Three-year term | Assist city officials and community partners to address bicycling and pedestrian issues + help develop a bicycle and pedestrian master plan.
Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission | Eight vacancies | Three-year term | Review, recommend, and consider policies affecting the planting, removal, and preservation of trees on public and private property.
Food Policy Committee | Five vacancies | Two-year term | Help identify and address challenges in food production, consumption, processing, distribution, and waste disposal, developing solutions that promote sustainability.
Greater Columbia Community Relations Council | Eight vacancies | Three-year term | Study community relations issues and recommend actions that best serve the community’s overall interests.
Manhattan Pie, a new New York-style pizzeria, will open Monday, Oct. 20 in the Vista District. Co-owner Mallikarjun Mallipedhi, who also helped start Ferrara Real NY Pizza in Irmo, plans to keep prices low and serve authentic New York favorites. The 45-seat spot features pizza, pasta, subs, and calzones. (The Post and Courier)

Why wait until Election Day? Early voting for the Nov. 4 municipal election runs Oct. 20-31 (closed weekends). Just bring your photo ID to any early voting center in your county and cast your ballot. Centers are open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. But before you go — make sure you’re registered.

Next Friday, Oct. 24, the Town of Irmo is bringing Motown Night to the Prisma Amphitheater at Moore Park. Moonkatdaddi will open at 7 p.m., followed by headliner Jackie’s Boy. Tickets are $15, kids 12 and under get in free, and food trucks and local vendors will be on hand.

Midlands Light Opera Society is mixing zombies with opera in “Night of the Singing Dead.” The show sets George Romero’s 1968 classic to music by Bizet, Arthur Sullivan, Giuseppe Verdi, W.A.
