In 1963, Henrie Monteith Treadwell was one of the first students to integrate the University of South Carolina. Today, Treadwell is watching a Columbia development honor her through its name + focus to bring communities together.
The redevelopment project on the 900 block of Harden Street in Five Points, which is the work of development group Campus + Main, will be named “The Treadwell”. The project has been in the works for over a year and before too long, will bring new life to the Columbia neighborhood.
So, what’s next for the development?
According to Sarah Ellis from The State, the first phase of the project, which included renovating the interiors and exteriors of the existing historical buildings, is complete. According to Campus + Main, multiple businesses have stated their intent to move in; however, these businesses haven’t been named yet. The first new businesses on the block are expected to open within a year to 18 months.
Eventually, the development could be home to up to 12 new businesses when the work is complete. In the coming months, construction on 2 new structures will begin + the former El Burrito building will be torn down.
Developers are hoping to turn The Treadwell into a destination within the Five Points neighborhood, according to The State, and the vision includes the sidewalk filled with outdoor seating + string lights hung in the alleyway. The development will also have its own parking lot.
A mural, which will also be inspired by Treadwell, is also planned for the area, though it hasn’t been designed yet, and will incorporate nearby universities.
