Building (and then abandoning) a nuclear project is complicated (and expensive) – and the V.C. Summer shutdown has yielded some significant stats. Here’s a breakdown of the nuclear reactor project failure by the numbers:

9 | number of rate increases for SCE&G customers since the start of the project

$1.7 billion | money SCE&G customers have already paid for the failed reactors

18% | percentage of customers’ utility bill from SCE&G that pay for the nuclear project

5 | number of rate increases for Santee Cooper customers since the start of the project

$540 million | money Santee Cooper customers have already paid for the failed reactors

$4 billion | money Santee Cooper borrowed for the project, which will be paid by taxpayers + customers

8% | percentage of customers’ bills from Santee Cooper that pay for the nuclear project

See more stats.

While Santee Cooper has voted against further rate hikes, SCE&G is still debating their next move.
