Chicharrones de Columbia

The Columbia Fireflies announced that they will take the field as the Chicharrones de Columbia for three home games at Segra Park (formerly Spirit Communications Park) April 18-20.

Why the name change? It’s part of Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversión program (i.e. “Fun Cup”) – which focuses on embracing the culture and values of Hispanic/Latin communities (who make up ~6% of the Midlands population, coming from places like Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Cuba + more).

And the Fireflies aren’t the only MiLB team doing this. 72 teams will change their name + logo for multiple games – including the Energía de Greenville + Perros Santos de Charleston. In total, 397 Copa de la Diversión games will be played across Minor League Baseball in 2019.

The initiative goes far beyond just a name change, too. For those three games, the Fireflies will sport a brand new uniform featuring the Chicharrónes logo + colors, that you can also wear – because Chicharrónes merchandise is already available for purchaseboth online and at the Columbia Fireflies Official Store at Segra Park.

During the games, local bands + dancers will performrepresenting people from different Latin American countries who live around our community. Chicharrónes (a dish generally consisting of fried pork belly or fried pork rinds) have also been added to the menu at concession stands and will be available for the entire season.

And one last thing… the team is doing a piggy bank (that looks like the little Chicharróne logo) giveaway on Friday, April 19. 🐖
