Columbia Green — a local nonprofit that promotes beautification through gardening, horticulture, education + conservation — announced a new initiative that Soda Citizens can join in on.

Grow Some Shade offers residents native species trees at no cost to make the city more beautiful + sustainable.

The initiative is part of the nonprofit’s goal of planting one square mile of canopy and understory trees, which will in turn reduce urban heat that contributes to climate change.

The first 100 residents to complete an application will receive a three-to-five foot tall tree. Applications are due on Fri., Nov. 4 and your tree can be picked up on Sun., Dec. 4 at Pelican Snoballs (2404 North Main St.)

Available trees include:

  • Dogwoods
  • Redbuds
  • Sycamores
