City Center Partnership (CCP) announced plans for a new art installation in the Main Street District yesterday. The project, Hope for Columbia, will aim to spread messages of hope and positivity through the city during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Letters spelling “HOPE” and painted to display the Columbia flag will be placed in the First Citizens Green Space on the corner of Main and Lady streets. Once installed, the art piece will remain on the green space until November, when it will be replaced with a decorative ball to celebrate the holidays.

Local artists Danny Harrington and Brandon McIver have been commissioned for the project. Harrington is the Technical Director for Town Theatre + he and McIver provide freelance design for other local theatre companies. Currently, the two are putting the project together at Town Theatre and expect to install it this month.

The idea for the art piece came from Matt Kennell, CEO + President of City Center Partnership, who was inspired by the “LOVE” letters that many cities already have. He + Lee Snelgrove, Executive Director of One Columbia, decided to add the image of the flag to show unity within the city.

We love this idea + can’t wait to see the finished product come to Main Street.
