Originally constructed in 1920, Gadsden Place has transformed into one of downtown Columbia’s newest live-work communities.
Located in the heart of the Vista, the twin Italianate buildings at 1209 and 1211 Gadsden St. (think: behind Jimmy John’s on Gervais St.) now host 8 apartments + 4 office/retail suites. These suites include 12 unique live-work units that are available to rent as of July 1, 2021.
In the past, the buildings housed several tenants including J.W. Vaughan Co., Inc. + the former location of B.W. Clark. This area is also a significant part of the West Gervais Historic District — it’s even listed in the National Register of Historic Places. During its rehabilitation from 2020-21, the project implemented an adaptive reuse method to preserve the buildings’ history + distinctive characteristics of early 20th century architecture in Columbia’s commercial + warehousing area.
The units:
Each unit is fully equipped with sleek appliances (including a washer/dryer, dishwasher, microwave, gas range + oven) plus other luxurious amenities like high, exposed ceilings + walk-in closets. Residents can enjoy unparalleled views of the Vista skyline and proximity to restaurants, retail + art galleries.
Two of our favorite units:
○ The Vault: Located on the ground level, this space contains the building’s only surviving early 20th century vault. It features spacious areas for offices or meeting rooms, a generous bathroom + an inclusive kitchenette.
○ The Lift: This live-work unit on the ground level brandishes a remodeled 20th century elevator made stationary to serve as a unique bar or counter area. Other features include spacious meeting and office areas + a fully appointed kitchenette.
