After the devastating floods of Oct. 2015 broke 51 state-regulated dams + Hurricane Matthew in 2016 broke another 20 dams, state legislators are looking to improve the future of dam safety across S.C. – aside from the increase in funding from previous years.
One of the improvements on SCDHEC’s dam-safety program is an emergency alert system to proactively let residents know that dam-threatening storms are approaching (if they live in neighborhoods that would be affected by the breach of any one of the state’s 2,400 dams). The alerts can reach 5,000+ residents across the state, all at once. 🚨
