The S.C. Department of Natural Resources’ Heritage Trust Program has found a home in the BullStreet Neighborhood at the historic Parker Annex building, on the corner of Barnwell + Calhoun St. – after being without a home for 40 years (since it started in 1974).

The hands-on, public program (the first of its kind in the U.S.) allows “regular people” the opportunity to not only dig at archaeological sites but also see the behind-the-scenes work of anthropology (i.e. cleaning, categorizing + analyzing) at 17 cultural heritage preserves across S.C.

Its new 9,344-sqft. office – now called The Parker Annex Archaeology Center – will give much needed room for a lab, educational + curation space, and storage for 1,900 boxes of artifacts.

Heritage Trust’s next planned dig is in early 2018 at Fort Jamar on James Island, right outside of Charleston.
