New year, new laws

S.C. State House

If you were recovering from your NYE shenanigans (or just crying about having to go back to work) on Jan. 1 – then you may have missed all the new S.C. laws that went into effect on New Year’s Day.

Here are a few things that changed:

🦁 You’ll have to lie to rest the dream of owning a house-ape, real-life ‘teddy’ bear or pet tiger. On Jan. 1 it became illegal to own dangerous wild animals in S.C. However, if you already owned one, you’ve been grandfathered in – you just have to do a few things like pay a one-time $500 fee + have a capture plan if your pet escapes.

🎓 Moms + dads paying their child’s S.C. college tuition, you can now claim a tax deduction for 50% of the tuition – for a max of $1,500 per year (that’s a $650 increase for 4-year schools + $1,150 increase for 2-year schools).

🚙 Vehicle registration fees at the DMV increased. Drivers under 65 will now pay $40 every other year, and drivers who are 65+ or disabled will now pay $36 every other year. Additionally, electric car owners will also now pay a $120 “road user fee” for initial registration of the vehicle, and Hybrid car owners will now pay a $60 “road user feed.” All the extra money will help pay for improvements on S.C. roads + bridges.
