In a hypothetical study that compared cost of labor, electricity + taxes of a 225,000-sqft. manufacturing plant with 500 workers, S.C. had the lowest annual operating costs for advanced manufacturing companies in the nation.
The cost came out to $30.1 million per year of operation – compared to states like Connecticut ($38.6 million/year) + New Jersey ($39.8/year), whose operating costs are the highest in the U.S.
Why are costs so low in S.C.?
⚙ low non-exempt hourly wages ($20.21/hr vs. $26.29/hr in N.J.)
⚙ low property tax
⚙ right-to-work status
⚙ nationwide low of 1.7% unionized workforce
⚙ infrastructure (Port of Charleston, S.C. Inland Port in Greer, planned Inland Port in Dillon)
⚙ leadership of U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, Gov. Henry McMaster + S.C. Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt
The report is published to help corporations make decisions on where to open up future plants and bringing back jobs to America that had moved overseas (i.e. BMW’s $600 million Spartanburg County plant expansion, announced last month).
