Remembering 9/11, locally.
Everyone remembers where they were September 11, 2001 – 16 years ago. In honor of Patriot Day, we wanted to take a moment to pay our respects to this day and those affected.
Still today, the U.S. is working to get ahead of terrorism + to better-protect the people of our country. Back in March, an anti-terrorism bill was proposed at the S.C. State House – a bill that would allow law enforcement to charge anyone supporting or aiding a terrorist act, and let them investigate flagged or suspicious activity.
(Currently, no state has an anti-terrorism law in place – the federal government decides whether or not to prosecute terrorism-related cases.)
Looking forward, there are a couple of ways to remember + honor Americans locally, like An Evening of Remembrance at the Vista’s 9/11 memorial this afternoon.
Thank you to all of those who have served and continue to serve our country. 🇺🇸
And while Cola looks like it’s somewhat in the clear from Hurricane Irma, here are some helpful links to keep you informed.
- Updated list of what’s closed + canceled (The State) – including Richland 1 + 2 schools, Lexington 1-4 schools, UofSC, Benedict + more.
- Flooding is likely biggest threat to Charleston (Post and Courier)
- Live updates: Irma moving into Tampa Sunday night (New York Times)
- Real-time map of storm location + alerts (Google Crisis Response)
- Safety tips + real-time alerts (Weather.com)
While we’re remembering those affected by September 11, 2001, we should also have the people affected by hurricanes Harvey + Irma on our minds. What happened to Texas, the caribbean islands, and now Florida, is devastating.
Everyone, please be safe today.
