If you live in downtown Columbia – especially in the Shandon area – you know the struggle of trying to maneuver around weekend morning foot races that shut down neighborhood roads. (Cola hosts ~100 road races per year, most of which take place in the same neighborhoods.)

Some neighborhood residents are starting to complain, so Columbia City Council’s administrative policy committee started a dialogue with Strictly Running – a local company who helps organize these races – to discuss the volume of the races + the issues surrounding them (i.e. residents being “trapped” in their neighborhood during races).

Some ideas for improvement are starting the races earlier in the morning (beginning at 7:15-7:30 a.m. vs. 8 a.m.) and doing a better job of keeping residents informed of when a race will take place.

The Shandon neighborhood has started a Twitter account (@ShandonNeighbo1) that will update residents with information regarding upcoming races.
