State House’s back porch?

Last month, more development plans for the revamp of South Main Street (south of the State House, near the UofSC Horseshoe) were released. The proposed plans for the 8-block area (half of which is owned by UofSC) include narrowing streets, widening sidewalks, removing parking lots and adding more green space + a park.

However, everyone is not on-board with this plan – saying it seems to be “university driven” and that a clearer balance is needed between what is university-planned + what is city-planned. (To be clear: UofSC has said this is not their project.)

Here are some of the concerns over the current plan: ⬇️

🚩 Will affect traffic flow

🚩 University property is not taxable to support the City’s tax base

🚩 Some historic buildings might not be preserved (mid-century-style Cornell Arms apartment building + UofSC’s Byrnes building aren’t included in renderings)
