Five ways to get connected in Columbia

As we pass the year anniversary of COVID-19 in South Carolina, it can be easy to feel disconnected from the community. As part of our 21 question series, reader Ashley C. asked “how should folks who are new to the area get involved/find friends and get connected to Cola?” + we felt this question couldn’t be more timely.

Whether you’re new to the city or not, there are plenty of ways to change up your routine and get plugged in. Check out these five groups and organizations that can get you started.

🤝 For the networkers

Columbia Opportunity Resource (or COR) is a networking group for professionals in the Columbia area that hosts regular events, including Table for Six and Crash Course Columbia. The organization works to boost talent retention in Columbia and create even more of that local pride.

🤝 For the leaders

Looking to learn more about the capital city + make connections with community leaders? Leadership Columbia is a 10-month program that provides leadership skills through unique opportunities, including a class project and two-day retreat. You’ll make networking connections and lasting friendships with your classmates.

If you’re interested, applications for the 2022 class are due today at 5 p.m.

🤝 For the civic-minded

If you’re looking to get connected through volunteering your time with the city, consider applying for a City of Columbia board or commission opening. These positions give citizens the opportunity to have a voice in the local government + typically meet monthly or bimonthly.

Currently, open positions include the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Board of Zoning Appeals, Midlands Authority for Conventions, Sports, and Tourism + more.

🤝 For the lovers of the arts

If you’re interested in art, this one’s for you. The Columbia Museum of Art Contemporaries is a membership-based group for all age groups that hosts both social and educational events for members to become more involved in the museum’s cultural activities.

🤝 For a group of women supporting women

Femme x COLUMBIA is a membership-based social group whose main focuses are gender equality and empowering women. A membership includes exclusive events and discounts with partner businesses, on top of the encouraging community you’ll join.
