This is part of our monthly series, #CitizensofSodaCity, a project by @gocola, featuring her conversations with distinctive strangers + friends at Soda City Market on Main Street and other Columbia hot spots.

Usually situated by the art museum and snug between a slew of food vendors from Soda City, Hippy Do Da‘s table stands out with her teaspoons, necklaces, earrings + bracelets. Meet Chris of Hippy Do Da Creations, a fun-loving, bohemian jewelry maker who has been sharing her creations at Soda City for the past 4 years.

What do you think of the Soda City Market?

Soda City has done absolute wonders for my small business and I am always singing their praises… The market has opened many new doors for my business and has undeniably provided a way for me to grow.

What is some advice that you would give to someone starting up at the market?

Don’t get discouraged if your first attempts aren’t as successful as you would like them to be. Smile, be friendly – and be patient! Time takes time. Keep showing up for your dreams and good things will happen!

What are some of your other passions?

Animals – if I had the time and resources, I would open a no kill shelter. Hell, if I could, I’d have a farm or a large plot of land where I would keep all the unwanted and abused animals.

Some life lessons?

The life I live today wouldn’t be possible without my sobriety. Like millions of others, I struggle with addiction. I am a recovering alcoholic but choose to medicate my addiction with sobriety. Through this journey, I have discovered who I am, and I’m still learning new things about myself. Sobriety has given me the courage to branch out and start Hippy Do Da. I am forever grateful and humbled by my life’s experiences, even the worst of times… because it’s all a part of my unique journey.
