Developments coming to Columbia in 2020

Over the past few months, we have heard so many grand announcements on various developments – from a massive brewery + several restaurants to a major outdoor retailer – coming to the Columbia area.

In case you’ve been busy and haven’t skimmed over some of this groundbreaking news, here’s a quick catch-up session.

Upscale Southern bistro MOMSnot to be confused with Market on Main, a.k.a. MoM – is coming to 1734 Main St. (in the former Al Amir location) in the new year. It’ll be open for lunch and dinner, serving menu items like ike peppercorn-crusted duck breast + sweet and sour collards – with entrees ranging $15-$30. Eventually, the owner plans to open the second level of the building as a music and event venue.

○ Charleston-based Verde is opening at 4840 Forest Dr. in Trenholm Plaza (in the former 32 Degrees Yogurt Bar spot) in early 2020. The locally-owned + operated fresh salads and wraps restaurant focuses on healthy food choices, bettering the environment and giving back to the community.

Cantina 76 on Main is undergoing renovations and an expansion project expected to be completed by early Spring 2020. They’ll increase the restaurant size by 1,600+ sq.ft. adding ~30 more seats to the dining area and nearly doubling the size of their current bar.

Savage Craft Ale Works initially planned to open in Summer 2019 – is now set to open in May of 2020. The West Columbia brewery at 430 Center St. (in the heart of the River District) will feature a 3,000 sq.ft. taproom, a 5,000 sq.ft building to house a microbrewery + rooftop terrace, a beer garden, stage for live music + tons more.

REI is opening in the BullStreet District in Spring 2020. The major outdoor retailer will have 20,000 sq.ft. of space at the intersection of Bull and Freed St. and plans to hire ~45 people.

○ Interactive art experience Immersion Art will open on the 4th floor of the building at 1626 Main St. in early 2020. It’ll be 6,000 sq.ft. of art + display space – with an additional 2,000 sq.ft. venue space for parties + corporate events. Conversion of the current space is set to begin in January.

○ Local nonprofit Camp Colea camp and retreat for children and adults with serious illnesses, disabilities and other challengesannounced they’ll break ground on a brand-new, $10 million state-of-the-art facility in April 2020. The Camp Cole campus, being built on 40 acres off Garners Ferry Rd., will have a medical facility, cafe, gym, swimming pool, amphitheater, enough cottages to house 200 guests + more. ○ Pop-up arcade Transmission Arcade has a permanent location coming to 1712 Main St. (the former space of Local Yocal) – also featuring a restaurant + bar. There’s no exact opening date set yet, but progress looks like it’ll be possibly sometime in early 2020.
