If you’ve been looking for ways to make an impact on the Midlands community, now’s your chance. Tomorrow, Sept. 21 is World Gratitude Day and World CleanUp Day. So, we’ve put together some ways you can both express gratitude + help clean up around the city.
Show some gratitude
World Gratitude Day was first celebrated in 1965, and has since become a worldwide annual event. While we should live every day as grateful Soda Citizens, on Sept. 21 we can do it as a community – and what better way to do that than to support our city’s nonprofits. Here’s how:
- Register to walk in the 2019 Midlands Walk to Defeat ALS tomorrow at 9 a.m. Fundraising through the walk will help find a treatment + ultimately a cure for ALS through the ALS Association South Carolina Chapter.
- Join Homeless No More for an evening of live music, BBQ, oysters + a silent auction at the Blues, BBQ + Oysters event tomorrow at 7 p.m. to benefit the families of St. Lawrence Place and Family Shelter.
- The UofSC Women of Law are running a 5K Saturday morning, and want you to join them post-run at 11 a.m. at Steel Hands Brewing to drink for a cause. $1 from every beer purchased will be donated to the Sexual Trauma Services of the Midlands.
- Eat peanuts, listen to live music + enjoy some good family-fun at the 12th Annual Palmetto Peanut Boil, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. tomorrow on Devine St. All proceeds from the sale of food + drinks will benefit the Columbia Animal Mission.
Keep the Midlands beautiful
This Saturday, 17 million people across 150 countries will clean up 500,000+ tons of trash – in an effort to fight the global trash epidemic. Here’s how you can make a difference in the Midlands:
- Adopt a riverway. Make today the day you and your family or a group of friends decide y’all are going to sign-up to clean up one of the Midlands’ rivers.
- If you’re a Richland County resident, participate in this joint effort recycling event, tomorrow, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. in NE Cola. They’ll be collecting everything from electronics and scrap metal to tires and shredded paper – a.k.a. all the things you don’t put in your recycle bins.
- Register to attend this free one-hour workshop, tomorrow at 8 a.m., on the basics of rainwater harvesting + composting at home. Pre-order your rain barrels and compost bins here, but they’re not required to attend the workshop.
- Join the Congaree Land Trust on their river sweep, tomorrow, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and help clean up a boat landing along the Congaree River in Cayce. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Register here.
