If your company made over $5.5 billion last fiscal year, then you’re part of quite an exclusive club: The Fortune 500 – made up of the largest revenue generating companies from across the nation who account for $13.7 trillion in total revenue, $1.1 trillion in total profits + employ a total of 28.7 million people (0.4% of the Earth’s total population).
When the very first list was released in 1955, it was compiled of companies who made their money from manufacturing, mining + energy exploration. But today, the list includes everyone from Walmart (#1) and Target (#39) to Visa (#153) and DISH Network (#232).
Unfortunately, no Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Columbia – or even in S.C. as a whole. The majority of Fortune 500 companies (~1 out of 3) are HQ’d in six major cities: New York (leading with 65 Fortune 500 HQs), Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Minneapolis + San Francisco.
S.C. does, however, have four companies listed in the Fortune 1,000: Domtar (#511, Fort Mill), Sonoco Products (#518, Hartsville), SCANA (#620, Cayce) + ScanSource (#642, Greenville).
But what would it take to have a Fortune 500 company open their headquarters in S.C.? Better infrastructure? Access to more talent? Let us know by clicking the button below. And who would you want to open their HQ here? Let us know in the comments below.
