It’s often the tradition for organizations to look back at the close of a year and reflect on its accomplishments. For Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE), that 2022 “look back list” is sky high. Not only is it easier for Soda Citizens to use the airport, but CAE has also done a lot to help the airport and region achieve nonstop progress.

Here’s what happened:

  • In May, CAE welcomed the South Carolina Air National Guard 169th Fighter Wing in an effort to support their need for a temporary relocation of their F-16 fleet while the runway at McEntire was being resurfaced.
  • Throughout the year, CAE’s wildly popular Art in the Airport program showcased and honored four outstanding local artists by utilizing its walls to display their talents for travelers to enjoy. Pro tip: Submissions are open for the 2023 program now through Saturday, Dec. 31.

  • This summer through late fall, CAE recognized + celebrated 80 Years of Flight that has taken place on the airport campus.
  • In October, CAE was the first airport in SC to proudly implement the internationally recognized Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, which supports passengers with hidden disabilities during their travel journey.

CAE’s technology updates allow travelers to fly with ease.

  • In late 2022, CAE completed the first phase of implementing a universal airport technology called a Common Use system. This system will allow current and future airlines to seamlessly use the same ticketing system to check in passengers quickly and efficiently. For passengers, they will be able to self-check if they desire on these snazzy new kiosks (see the pic above). Additional phases will be completed in early 2023, with a full unveiling of CAE’s new main entrance to follow.
  • Finally, as of December, the airport’s ongoing air service efforts paid off with the announcement that American Airlines will offer daily nonstop service from CAE to LGA beginning in May 2023.
  • On the horizon: In 2023, CAE will begin a massive expansion project of its TSA checkpoint to be able to serve future passenger growth the airport is projected to see. This update will also streamline the TSA check-in process at CAE.
