About (PARK)ing Day
Imagine you’re walking down Main St.; you pass by a parking spot your car was just in the other day – but this day, the parking spot is covered in artificial grass, has a couple of benches, some lawn games + people hanging out like it’s normal. What’s going on?
It sounds like PARK(ing) Day – an annual, global event focused on creating awareness of the need for more urban open spaces that takes place on September 20. The very first PARK(ing) Day took place in California in 2005 and has since spread to cities all over the world – from a succulent garden in Madrid to streetside ping pong in Los Angeles.
Friday, Sept. 20 will be Columbia’s 5th year participating in PARK(ing) Day, sponsored by arts and history-focused non-profit One Columbia. City-owned meter spots will be temporarily transformed into park-like areas – ft. art galleries, interactive activities + more – that invite the public to hang out, relax + enjoy.
Want to get in on this fun? Applications to transform your own parking space are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 21. Here are some ideas from previous year’s transformations to help get your creative juices flowing.
