Yesterday, Saluda Shoals Park announced the opening day of their brand new, all-inclusive playground. The playground will officially open on Saturday, August 24 with a ribbon-cutting at 9:30 a.m. The ultimate goal for this addition is to “foster inclusion, friendship, and understanding among children and adults of all abilities using nature-based play elements.”

Here are all the details you need to know:

  • It’s all-inclusive. Meaning, people who have disabilities or physical restrictions can use the playground, as well as those without physical challenges (and even adults).
  • It was paid for by donations to the Saluda Shoals Foundations. Donations of time, money + energy were given to the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC) – whose budget wasn’t impacted.
  • The whole idea stemmed from an email. A concerned parent sent an email to ICRC in hopes of the park adding equipment that would accommodate her son who uses a wheelchair.
  • It’s a pretty cool playground. The design is supposed to be a reflection of the overall park, with features like bridges, nature + water elements. Other features include a wheelchair-accessible glider, a sound garden with interactive music, accessible restrooms + more.
