What will happen to Fairfield Co.?

Even though the recently abandoned V.C. Summer nuclear project was expected to generate ~$80 million in tax revenue for Fairfield County, Unit One (a V.C Summer nuclear reactor that opened in 1984) still generates $28 million in tax revenue for the countycreating hope for leaders of the area.

County leaders are doing everything in their power to get the failed project back on track + get the county in a better place. The anticipated $80M revenue from the project was supposed to go to schools, improving buildings, upgrading county facilities + attracting new economic development (i.e. getting recently-announced Newberry Samsung plant to move there).

Now, Fairfield County’s future is unclear. A lot of leaders are pushing to restart the project, but it’s been said that that’s unlikely. SC Works – the organization created to help the 5,000 laid-off workers (500 living in Fairfield County) find new jobs – is working to make sure people in the area (and beyond) can continue to pay their bills.
