If you were born in 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, or 20102022 is your year. Today marks the start of the Lunar New Year, celebrated by Asian countries + around the world (technically, we’re 24 hours behind the Eastern Hemisphere, so celebrations began yesterday).

Did you know? Each year on the lunar calendar is represented by one of twelve animals — on a twelve-year cycle. Take a deep breath Gamecock fans, 2022 is the Year of the Tiger. The Tiger is said to represent strength, power, and bravery — and Tiger years are said to be a time of big changes through risk-taking and adventure. 🐅

If the mention of “big changes” makes you a bit uncomfortable, you’re not alone. While change isn’t always easy, we’re here to help make this year’s adventures and risk-taking a bit more fun.

Channel your inner Tiger + put your strength to the test at Brickhouse Gym or Cottontown Crossfit. Take your daily walks through Riverfront Park up a notch by utilizing the free exercise equipment at the Canal entrance. Want to flex those mental muscles? Attend a trivia night at Craft and Draft on Devine or try your hand at Fit Columbia’s Puzzle Tournament.

There’s nothing quite like the bravery you feel while facing your fears. If you’re looking for some more daunting tasks, hit the rapids in a kayak with help from Palmetto Outdoors, keep everyone laughing at Art Bar’s open mic comedy nights, or serenade strangers at New Brookland Tavern’s karaoke hosted by Party Jesus.

And, if you’re really looking for a tasting adventure, head on over to DiscoverSC to check out the SC Midlands BBQ Trail. It’s a great way to explore Cola and beyond + decide whether your allegiance lies with mustard or vinegar based sauce. It’s been said that good BBQ doesn’t need sauce, I (David here) think a peppery vinegar sauce hits the spot.
