5 conversations we want to join

Meet Reddit, a website for conversations a little more focused than comments on a Facebook post, but more casual + personalized than a forum.

A brief primer on how Reddit works: users subscribe to specific subreddits, which are individual communities for conversation about a certain topic, like r/worldnews, r/science, or r/aww. You create a discussion in a subreddit and users can comment + upvote or downvote the post, which is a good indication of how many people are interested or agree/disagree.

Today we’re looking at r/columbiYEAH, a subreddit dedicated specifically to Columbia, S.C. There are 2,300 people subscribed, asking questions, discussing news, and sharing photos. Here are five of the most interesting conversations we wanna hop in on.

🧀 Wondering where I can find the best gas station pumped nacho cheese or something of the sort

Oddly enough, people had answers to this question. And a lot of good recommendations for cheesy restaurants around Columbia came from it (thank goodness), like Henry’s buffalo chip overboard (buffalo chips smothered with homemade pimento cheese, grilled jalapenos + bacon bits; served with ranch dressing), Rockaways’ pimento cheese fries + Salty Nut’s pimento cheese tots. But if you’re still curious about the real answer to the question, it sounds like Circle K is typically a good option + Walmart Neighborhood Market on Knox Abbot sells the “gas station cheese” in big cans.

👫Columbia has some great people :)

There were several convos of users trying to meet people + make new friends; specifically “looking for Asian friends,” people to grab a beer with at River Rat or just a someone to have dinner with. Thankfully, we’re a pretty friendly city and so many suggestions came in, from hanging out at Soda City to meeting like-minded people at Richland Library’s Makerspace.

🗓Where do you get your event news?

Someone asked, and another someone said COLAtoday – and we promise it was no one from our team. We’re just happy to be a resource. Also mentioned was Free Times + Top 10 Columbia.

🐶Indoor Dog Friendly Spaces

Because our 4-legged friends and family are priority #1. All the Columbia breweries were listed, but we also learned Home Depot + Lowe’s Home Improvement welcome the pups inside.

🍗Best BBQ in the Columbia/Lexington area?

By far, the most popular topic in r/columbiYEAH over the last month was BBQ. It is a staple food of the South, after all. Little Pigs, Shealy’s, Doko Smoke, City Limits Q + Midwood Smokehouse were among the several place mentioned. Plus, the other conversation with the most chatter: What’s the word on Maurice’s BBQ? I guess you’ll have to click to find out.

If you got sucked into r/columbiYEAH, also check out r/columbiasc (with 1,000 subscribers), and r/southcarolina, r/asheville, r/greenville + r/charleston.
