Did you know there’s a place in the South Carolina State Museum where you can lay back in your chair, stare up at the darkness and get your mind blown? The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Planetarium is that place.

The latest Planetarium show, Black Holes, is nuts. Part educational, part simulated ride through the stars, Black Holes walks you through how a star becomes a black hole – and what would happen if you got pulled into one. (RIP Matthew McConaughey.)

The subject of black holes has been super popular recently – whether it’s because it’s now okay to embrace your inner nerd; thanks to Einstein’s and Stephen Hawking’s legacies; or just because space is weird and fascinating. So, SCSM brought the topic to the Planetarium.

Back up. What is the Planetarium and when can I go? The State Museum’s 55-foot digital dome planetarium has 145 reclining seats for viewers to be completely absorbed in what they’re seeing + hearing. Think: a movie theatre, but the screen seems as big as the night sky.

The more educational shows often attract field trips, but the more entertaining ones make for a really cool, offbeat date night. The museum recently acquired some full-dome, immersive, super trippy music experiences for a new series called “Cosmic Fridays” kicking off with the Led Zeppelin show on April 27 (if only it launched one week before… 😉).

If black holes aren’t enough, see just how mind-bending these shows are. 👇

But if you want to go for a family-friendly day trip, SCSM is hosting a special March 30-April 30 where you can get into Black Holes for free with purchase of the Explorer 2 combo ($7-16.96).

The Planetarium hosts ~5 rotating shows per month, varying showtimes (Mon.-Sun.). See shows + get tickets here. (Highly recommend happy hour Sangria at 116 State followed by a Tuesday, 6 p.m. Live Sky Tour. 👌)
