DYK there are more than 90,000 veterans + active military in the Columbia area? Even if this number surprises you, you’ve likely heard of the VA (Veterans Affairs), which provides health services to veterans – Columbia’s is the William Jennings Bryan Dorn VA.

When a veteran has to undergo medical treatment, their family – who may reside in another city or state – will need a place to stay. Sadly, up to 25% of veterans being treated have had family members sleeping in their hospital rooms or in their cars due to lack of hotel vacancy.

Enter: Fisher House Columbia, the new 13,400-sqft. development breaking ground this year on-campus at the Dorn VA, which will provide free stays for out-of-town families of veterans being treated at the VA. Once completed, Fisher House Columbia will include 16 suites.

The Fisher House program has served 32,000+ families nationwide since 2018. Each individual Fisher House relies on community support + local organizations, including Columbia’s. Fisher House’s Board of Directorswhich includes local leaders like Nephron Pharmaceuticals President + CEO Lou Kennedy – will assist in fundraising efforts for the center’s construction.
