Creating more space where Midland’s children of all abilities will have the opportunity to play. To celebrate, the park officials + community will host a groundbreaking ceremony today at 10 a.m. at Saluda Shoals Park East — 6071 St. Andrews Rd.

Leo’s Landing will add an additional 2 acres of inclusive play space to the existing playground, which will complete the original vision for the space.

New additions to the park will include:

  • Mogul Outpost — the future home of a swing designed for children of all abilities and play scape structures with challenges, including a climbing arch and mini bridges.
  • Zip Krooz — a 2-way zip line, which will include inclusive seating options.
  • A musical entryway.
  • A low-energy space designed to build connections in intimate spaces like the reading + kindness corner, hammock park, and hobbit village.
  • An ADA trail adventure with various terrain and equipment challenges.

The $1.7 million expansion project is expected to be completed in 2022.

The Bugenske family’s son, Leo, was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy and was the original inspiration for Leo’s Landing. The idea led to a project that created a play space accessible to all children in the Midlands.
