Lowes Foods is launching its very own liquor store called Knock Knock exclusively here in the Midlands.

The Lexington Knock Knock is now open next to the Lowes Foods at 5222 Sunset Blvd., and the location going in next to the Forest Acres Lowes Foods is currently under construction with estimated completion in early March. These two locations will be the only Knock Knock stores in the Lowes Foods footprint across the Southeast; the Midlands serving as the test market for potential expansion.

Knock Knock is named after the Prohibition-era practice of thirsty folks knocking on doors of secret bars when alcohol sales were banned in the U.S. The stores feature a circa-1920s Speakeasy theme (complete with jazz music playing inside) and offer ~800 different bottles, including an entire section of local and regional spirits, high-end brands and even mini-bottles. Which is pretty impressive when you consider the size of the stores: the Sunset Blvd. store is 500 sqft. and the Forest Acres store will be just ~400 sqft.

Keep on your radar: The stores will partner with different distilleries to offer weekly tastings on Fridays from 4-7 p.m., including lots of local + regional distilleries.

Is this legal? Yes. Knock Knock is located just outside of Lowes Foods, with a separate entrance due to liquor laws. Shoppers can buy their spirits and check out directly inside of Knock Knock with the help of Knock Knock’s associates (nicknamed “rum runners” in Speakeasy fashion), then run into Lowes Foods and grab cocktail ingredients or their full grocery haul, checking out separately in-store. Pretty cool how the times have changed: #TBT to when Cola only served mini-bottles; now we can buy our booze at the grocery store.
