Gov. Henry McMaster’s two-years worth of missing emails might be a sign of government agencies struggling to keep up with technology.

The now-Governor’s emails should have been archived from his time as lieutenant governor, but they were auto-deleted before they were archived, which likely violates S.C.’s public records law.

With sending + receiving thousands of emails each day, the legislature uses a third-party agency to manage their archives. And to save space, they keep emails for only 180-days.

According to McMaster’s spokesperson, the governor had no personal involvement in deleting the emails. He did, however, personally save some emails from 2015-2017 when he was Lt. Gov. – which is apparently more than former Lt. Govs. have done.
