Have you heard of the Swedish environmentally-friendly fitness trend called plogging?

It’s been known by other names as well, like trashercize (must be said with jazz hands), but official plogging started in Sweden and is now making its mark all over the world. Runners and joggers who had grown tired of seeing cigarette butts, discarded soda cans + other litter on the streets decided to amp up their exercise routines with doing something great for their communities: picking up that litter while jogging.

You’ve probably heard us talk about Plogging and Pints at Columbia Craft before – but if you haven’t been, local nonprofit PalmettoPride is hosting another event where you can try the trend in Cola: the new Plogging with Pride 5K.

It’s a walk/run on April 6 in Forest Acres – part of Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup – where litter winner takes all. It’s not a race for time; but a race to pick up the most litter along the course. Keep South Carolina Beautiful and PalmettoPride will supply trash bags + gloves for participants so all you have to bring is a friend and your hustle for keeping our city litter-free. Register here.

Side note: It may seem a little gross to think about picking up other people’s trash (especially cigarettes) but is it worse than seeing it day after day, decomposing (or not) on the streets of the city we love so much? Exactly.
