A revitalization plan for the Pontiac community in Northeast Columbia, which has been in the works for ~3 years, is nearing completion. Prior to sending the plan to Council, Richland County is looking for community input + we’re breaking down the details so you use your community voice (if you feel so inclined).

So what’s the project area?

If approved, the project would encompass 800 acres off Two Notch Road east of the Village at Sandhill. This includes a subdivision, mobile home community, and Richland Northeast Industrial Park. Approximately 2,000 people live within the plan’s limits.

While the project doesn’t include the Village at Sandhill or Clemson Sandhill Research Center, county officials believe the nearby project will bring positive change to its surrounding areas.

What are the project’s major focus points?

⚒️ Rebuilding Spears Creek Church Road, including more lanes, better storm drainage + walking and bike paths

⚒️ Expanding The COMET’s service with additional stops

⚒️ Improving Two Notch Road with added traffic lights + better lanes and intersections

⚒️ Building a dog park, walking loop, recreational fields, and potentially a community center

⚒️ Encourage additional businesses to come to the area in vacant properties

I have an opinion — what can I do?

Richland County is holding a virtual public forum tomorrow (April 22) at 6 p.m. for public input. Those interested can join the meeting on Zoom. Comments will be accepted until April 23 + can also be made on the plan’s website here.

Following public comments, the plan will be reviewed by the county planning commission before the plan and community feedback go to County Council for full approval.
