With Volvo Cars + Mercedes-Benz Vans planning mass hirings (5K+ between the two companies) in the first quarter of 2018, S.C. is about to see a substantial demand for manufacturing jobs, but we need a training facility.

ReadySC, a program that promises capable employees to new manufacturers, is currently using Trident Technical College’s ~44K-sqft. space as its primary education facility. However, this space does not have the equipment or capacity to meet current + future needs.

To create a central training facility, the state Commerce Department has proposed purchasing an abandoned factory off I-26 near Summerville for $5.5 million, which would give ReadySC ~500K+-sqft. of specialized training space. The facility will be shared by manufacturers looking for a long-term, dedicated training space (like Volvo + Mercedes) with the flexibility to accommodate more companies as the manufacturing boom continues to grow.
